The holidays should be a time for giving

 By: Abby Richwine

The holidays are a time to give to others and help those who are in need. This year, you should volunteer to help with the Christmas basket program. Milton-Freewater has had a Christmas basket program for over 50 years! People from all around town come together both at the Elk’s Club and at the Adventist Church in Milton-Freewater.
Each year, more and more baskets are requested, and of course more help is needed. The last few years, Sykes has generously allowed the Elk’s Christmas Barrels to be put in the lobby area for the canned food to be piled inside. The foods include non perishable items that make a full quality meal, such as butter, eggs, turkey, rolls, potatoes, milk, etc. Last year, over 65 families were fed during the Christmas season.
Every year, my siblings and I have kept our tradition of helping out with the baskets. My brother, Derek, is 22 now and in his senior year of college, and my sister, Sydney, age 18, is a senior here at Mac-Hi. They both work hard to achieve their goals. When we first got there, it always seemed busy and crowded, but we jumped right in and started loading foods into the boxes.
Each box has an address on it with a first and last name of the person who requested it along with a phone number if you have difficulty finding their address. Some families may have two boxes because they have more mouths to feed. After all the boxes are filled, they are taken out to vehicles to be delivered. It’s a good idea to try to take as many boxes as possible so they can be quickly be delivered to the people waiting eagerly for their perfect Christmas dinner.
Once Derek, Sydney, and I get our baskets loaded into the car, we always make a quick run to Dutch Bros to get some hot chocolate to keep us warm. Then we’re off, blasting the Christmas music and singing along while we drop off the Christmas baskets like Santa’s little helpers! The best part of volunteering for the Christmas basket program is watching the people receiving their baskets. A lot of people are excited or happy. Some tend to be a bit shy and don't like the attention.
Overall, during the Christmas season, you should give to others. Help when it is most needed, and feed those who are hungry. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
