WWCC Tour for Seniors - Coming Soon!

Walla_walla_community_college_logo.gifAttention, seniors! If you are thinking about going to Walla Walla Community College, then you’re in luck. Mac-Hi has decided to take all seniors on a tour to WWCC, most likely on a Wednesday. Administration is planning to break the tour into two trips so that there will only be 60 kids at a time. It will be during school, and you will go with your advisory class and teachers. This trip will only be for seniors; on the bright side, the school might also be having a trip for juniors in the spring.

However, please keep in mind that this is still being talked about, and that the dates aren’t set in stone, so keep an eye out for more information.

'Star Trek' and 'Star Wars': They Aren’t The Same!

by DARBY FRESKE

Everyone who visits the Internet knows that the new Star Wars movie is coming out, and, since there are some of you that think that Star Wars and Star Trek are the same, I am here to correct you. They are completely different.
Star Trek, originally a TV series, is a space western/science fiction that centers around a crew who serves in Starfleet, a space-based peacekeeping and humanitarian armada. Star Trek has several planets, a lot of them have different tribes, or creatures on them, and takes place in the far future. Star Wars, originally a trilogy, is a space opera fantasy franchise set in the distant past of a fictional galaxy, revolving around princes, princesses, knighthood, and chivalry. Star Wars has many different planets as well, however they are based on elements such as water, ice, desert, etc.
The two sagas have different vehicles and means of transportation. Star Trek has the Enterprise (NX-01), the USS Enterprise (the original, NCC-1701-A/B/C/D/E and F), Deep Space Nine, the Defiant, the USS Voyager, various spacecraft. Star Wars has various spacecraft such as, Star Destroyers, A-Wings, B-Wings, X-Wings, Y-Wings, TIE fighters, the Death Star, the Millennium Falcon, Imperial shuttles, AT-AT, AT-ST, various starfighters, MTT, AAT, STAP, AT-RT, AT-TE.
StarTrekVSStarWars.png Star Trek has 12 movies and several TV shows, and Star Wars has 6 movies. The pinnacles are also different (most important thing). In Star Trek, it is debated between Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek: First Contact, and in Star Wars fans are conflicted between Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.
In Star Trek the main characters are Spock, James T. Kirk, Uhura, Leonard McCoy, Scotty, and Pavel Chekov. They all worked on the USS Enterprise helping people in need. In Star Wars you have Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Boba Fett, Princess Leia, Han Solo, R2-D2, C-3PO, and Chewbacca. They all play very different, very important roles in the movies.
If you still believe that they are the same, you’re crazy. Spock and Darth Vader are not even close. If you have and any questions about this feel free to come to me, and I will send you on the correct path.

Mac-Hi's New 'Text Alert' System

download.jpg Looking at the school's official website, I noticed that they have added a new way to contact your parents. They now have what is called a text alert, and it’s when they text your parents instead of calling when you are absent. So, if you are one of those kids who just delete the message or your parents aren’t
home, watch out! Parents have an option to opt into getting the text, and this will go into effect at parent teacher conferences.
The school decided that it wasn’t very effective to call the homes of students because of parents not getting home to hear it or to answer the call. For a parent to opt out, they will have to tell the teacher or the school. If your parents are going to the conferences on Monday and Tuesday, then they will be hearing about it and or being taught about online grade checking. Too many kids think this seems unnecessary or ridiculous, but this is needed. Colleges look at attendance records, and it may have a huge effect on you. Parents can get into trouble if you aren’t showing up to class, so go to class. Remember, at conferences parents will be informed about the text alert, and online grade checking.

The Homecoming Dance

Mac-Hi students dressed to impress on October 17th for the homecoming dance. The dance was full of life and everyone was looking great. When the DJ  played “Cotton Eyed Joe,” everyone broke out in a line dance, girls and boys. The excitement in the room was extraordinary. Later, the Homecoming Court took the floor with their own song while everyone watched. Queen Abi Biggs looked stunning in her dress, as did the other princesses.

Ms. McKenzie Lynn, one of our former English teachers, came to chaperone. She looked lovely, as always, and showed a glowing smile to everyone she talked to. Ms. Garcia took lots of pictures, and most likely got pictures of you and your dates as you walked in.

The dance went from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. and the party never stopped. 266 Mac-hi students attended the dance. The dance was held at the Armory next to the school, and some of the students, parents, and staff decorated the building for us. Make sure to thank them for that. All in all, the 2015 Homecoming dance was an extraordinary success.

Mac-Hi Volleyball Team Strives Towards Championship

by DARBY FRESKE

wp_ss_20150921_0002.jpgSecond-year coaches Amanda Nelson and Brooke Garton are hard at work preparing for a winning volleyball season this year.
With new and returning players, they “expect us to do better than last year,” says coach Nelson.  Some players to look out for on varsity are new freshman Jadie Jackson, junior Delaney  Karrels and seniors Shannon Carter, Amber Wells and, Brittney Erb.
Shannon Carter is the libero (a back row player who gets digs and shanked balls) for the Lady Pioneers. She is very scrappy and aggressive on the court. At 5’ 9”,  Amber Wells is one of the main spikers on the team, and also she is also a blocker, and she has been a great player since middle school.  The Lady Pioneers have played tremendously with two home games already. When asked how she feels about the team this year, coach Nelson stated, “ I feel really good about this year’s team. I believe they will go far this season.” In 2015 with eleven wins and seventeen losses, Mac-Hi ranked 3rd in the Greater Oregon League.
Currently, the Lady Pioneers have 1 win and 5 losses this year. The team would really love to go to state this year and get a higher ranking in the Greater Oregon League. “I think we have a lot of potential,” says an anonymous source. “We don’t have a lot of supporters during the home games” some more of the players complain. “So come support the Lady Pioneers, keep up with your Mac-Hi volleyball team. Go Lady Pioneers!” encouraged setter Delaney Karrels.
